Creating Generic
Option Categories
5. Introduction
Generic option categories can be set up so that vehicle options can be put into 8option groups9 to help to search
for vehicles with a specific option or options.
Alloy wheels are a good example of how this generic option grouping works. There are many types of alloy
wheels available on most cars either as standard fit, factory fit or dealer fit. A customer wanting to buy a car
might specify the vehicle must have alloy wheels. To search through each stock record looking to see which
vehicles have alloy wheels can be time consuming. To overcome this problem each alloy wheel option (and there
are usually many available) can be linked to a generic option category called (say) ALLOYS. To find all the
vehicles with alloy wheels a generic options search can be done using the criteria of ALLOYS and all the stock
records with the matching criteria will be identified.
The matching records identified by the search can be looked at in more detail to find which alloy wheels have
been fitted and the vehicle can be checked to see if it fits any further requirements of the customer.
The search using generic option categories can be done for more than one category thus if both alloy wheels and
metallic paint are required, provided generic categories exist for both of these options, they can both be used in
the same search.
